The objection is that the principle is inconsistent with a view about mental properties assumed by Kim, namely, that they are second-order properties. We argue that Schröder misconstrues the notion of second-order property. We distinguish three notions of second-order property and highlight their problems and virtues. Finally, we examine the consequence of Kim’s principle and discuss the issue of whether Kim’s ‘supervenience argument’ generalizes to all special sciences or not.We defend Jaegwon Kim’s ‘causal inheritance’ principle from an objection raised by Jurgen Schröder. The Essence of Dispositional Essentialism
Some natural properties have causal roles; call these ‘causal properties’. Dispositional essentialists think that some causal properties have their causal roles essentially. For the purposes of this paper, I treat dispositional essentialism (hereafter ‘DE’) as a claim about the properties of (ideal, completed, fundamental) science. If the basic ontology of completed science (hereafter ‘Physics’...
متن کاملThe Association Between Dental Anomalies and Hypodontia Among 9-20 years Old Individuals in Ardabil City, Iran: A Causal-Comparative Study
Introduction: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the prevalence of dental anomalies and hypodontia. Materials and Methods: In this retrospective study, the panoramic radiographs of 101 cases with tooth agenesis (except for the third molar) were studied and compared with [Pn1] those of a non-agenesis control group of 182 subjects. The subjects were within the age range of ...
متن کاملAdaptive Control Loops as an Intermediate Mind-brain Reduction Basis
Jaegwon Kim has proposed that the proper way to reduce mental to physical events and properties is to apply the causal inheritance-as-identity principle: “M is the property of having a property with such-and-such causal potentials, and it turns out that property P is exactly the property that fits the causal specification. And this grounds the identification of M with P”. It is argued that this...
متن کاملNomic-Role Nonreductionsim: Identifying Properties by Total Nomic Roles
I introduce “nomic-role nonreductionism” as an alternative to causal-role functionalism in the philosophy of mind. It is inspired by recent trends in cognitive science that emphasize embodied cognition and multi-level methods of explanation in the special sciences. While causal-role functionalists identify mental properties by an intra-level transition theory that describes relations between in...
متن کاملRelativistic Dynamics of Non-ideal Fluids: Viscous and heat-conducting fluids II. Transport properties and microscopic description of relativistic nuclear matter
Abstract In the causal theory of relativistic dissipative fluid dynamics, there are conditions on the equation of state and other thermodynamic properties such as the second-order coefficients of a fluid that need to be satisfied to guarantee that the fluid perturbations propagate causally and obey hyperbolic equations. The second-order coefficients in the causal theory, which are the relaxatio...
